Stause experienced difficult circumstances during her childhood. Her biological father was of mixed Japanese-Spanish heritage and separated from her mother, before she realized that she was pregnant. Stause’s father, Jeff, came into the picture later. She even lived in a tent at one point and missed an entire middle school year. She washed in the river and relied on food-stamps during this period, while keeping her living conditions hidden from her peers. Stause’s parents suffered from addiction and mental illness. The family briefly became a member of the Worldwide Church of God at the age of ten. Stause describes the mother she grew up with as self-righteous and a free-spirited person. She also says that her mother has never had a stable job.
